Capital markets need a new operating model: Built on data, delivered by people

By James Maxfield, Chief Product Officer.

Operating model transformation is easy to say but notoriously hard to execute upon. I think it tends to be simplified because people look at it purely through the lens of automation: “I have a set of processes that are being performed. I’m going to bring automation to them. It makes the operating model better. I don’t need as many people in there and I end up with a higher quality process.”

In reality, the complexity is much deeper than that. And it’s a lot of that complexity that leads to such a high degree of transformational failure.

Over 70% of transformation efforts fail, or fail to deliver the right outcomes. A lot of the complexity that actually sits underneath a lot of operating models is a key part of that.

You can read more about my thoughts around how to employ a more people and data centric approach in my latest paper for the Journal of Securities, Operations and Custody. I’m sure you’ll find it an interesting story as you start thinking about how you evolve your operating model of the future. Click the image below to read it.
